Andy Nevala has been recognized by Downbeat magazine on 10 different occasions, winning individual Downbeat Music Awards for composition, arranging, and performing/directing. He has performed on over 20 CDs released in the US, Japan, and South America and maintains an active performing schedule in the Southeastern United States. 

Dr. Nevala is Director of Jazz Studies at Jacksonville State University, overseeing the program while directing ensembles including the Downbeat Award Winning Jazz Ensemble I. Under his tutelage the JSU Jazz program has more than doubled in size. 

Professionally, he has toured the world with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Steve Lippia, Eddie Turner, and The ProJazz Trio. He’s performed with Latin & Salsa bands across the country including Mazacote, Orquesta Borinquen, Conjunto Colores, and Orkestra MaCuba.

He is widely in demand as guest conductor, performer, and clinician, with recent guest artist performances at the Dave Brubeck Institute, the University of the Pacific, California State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, and the University of Alabama.

As an arranger he has written compositions for the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Denver Brass, the Steve Lippia Big Band, Atlanta Jazz Orchestra, JSU Jazz Ensemble I, Orchestra MaCuba, and many others.  

Andy holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Jazz Piano Pedagogy from the University of Colorado, Boulder, a Master of Music degree in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Northern Colorado, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Boise State University.
