Shane Porter has written music for jazz bands, concert bands, marching bands, and choirs throughout the country. He’s written horn arrangements and performed with two American Idol Winners. His music has been featured on ESPN and can frequently be heard during collegiate football game broadcasts on other networks. 

As a trumpet player, he’s played with legends of the jazz world including Wycliffe Gordon and Wynton Marsalis of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, “Doc” Severinsen, “Dizzy” Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval, The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and Lou Soloff of Blood, Sweat and Tears fame.

He’s also performed with a host of pop artists including Stevie Wonder, Kenny Rogers, The Temptations and Four Tops, The O'Jays, and Ruben Studdard.

He's performed as the lead trumpet with The Temptations with The Columbus Symphony, The Alabama Symphony, The Knoxville Symphony, The Phoenix Symphony, and Jennifer Holliday with The Chattanooga Symphony.

Shane founded The New South Jazz Orchestra, a big band of notable jazz players and educators from the Southeast. He produced their CD, and composed and arranged most of the music. The album has received international recognition.  

He taught jazz instruction at Troy State University, Alabama State University, and was the Assistant Director of Bands/Jazz program director at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Shane earned a Bachelors Degree from the University of Alabama in Composition/Arranging and Jazz Studies. He received a Masters in Music Education from Troy State University. He’s also composed or arranged multiple music publications for me Warner Bros., Alfred Reed, and Jalen/Matrix music and co-authored a music appreciation text published by Kendall Hunt.
